What is counselling and what it is not?

  • Counselling is a helping approach to explore difficulties including stressful or emotional experiences of the client. The goal of counselling is to help client see things clearly and from a different perspective to enable clients to make positive changes by focusing on their feelings, experiences or behaviour. Trust and confidentiality (within limits) are paramount to successful counselling.
  • Counselling is not about advising client, providing solution to client’s problem or expecting client to behave in a particular way. Client assumes full responsibility for their decision to act (or not to act) on the identified goals.
